Media reports chronicle the plight of thousands of unaccompanied children fleeing the violence of Central America, with almost 2,000 of them sheltered here in San Diego. Much of what is reported is accurate, even sympathetic but on occasion oversimplified.
Even though there is no current knowledge of these children's legal process moving forward, Casa Cornelia is committed to provide the most effective legal response to anyone proceeding with their case here in San Diego County. Given the increased demand for services, it takes discipline to remain focused on identifying those with viable humanitarian claims, those who would be in grave danger if returned to their homelands or possible continued victimization. Determining eligibility is crucial for the delivery of quality legal services and for being conscientious stewards of limited resources. But it takes its toll amid so much suffering.
